KH. Abdul Wahid Hasyim’s Paradigm on Freedom of Learning in Madrasa

In the early twentieth century, Indonesia witnessed flourishing of madrasa as a new model for Muslim educational institutions to respond public schools established by Dutch colonial era. Abdul Wahid Hasyim was one prominent intellectuals who introduced some approaches in learning process which different from traditional system pesantren. The purpose this paper is elaborate on Hasyim’s thoughts freedom using historical approach understand context ideas. As result, argues that offered mixed curriculum combining Islamic and secular subjects are considered useful students future. Another finding preferred tutorial method process, replaced teacher-centered learning, common pesantrens. To extent, similar student-centered contemporary pedagogy.
